British sports magazine 'SportsPro' has revealed its list of the world’s most marketable athlete for 2015. While sports experts were confident that modern day legends such as Usain Bolt, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo would score high on the list. Many would’ve been left surprised, when they learnt that the Indian Cricket star, Virat Kohli has been rated as the sixth most marketable athlete of this year.
The monthly magazine that reports on the financial aspects of sports across the world, placed 26-year-old Virat Kohli just a notch below British Formula One champion, Lewis Hamilton. This list was also incredibly lenient to Neymar, who was named as the second most marketable sportsperson.
Besides this, United State golfer Jordan Spieth was crowned number three, while another American swimmer Missy Franklin was put at fourth.
Below Kohli, was United States basketball star Stephen Curry at seventh, followed by Japanese tennis sensation Kei Nishikori.
Tennis player Novak Djokovic was placed at 14 and Ronaldo, Messi found the 16th and 22nd spot respectively. Besides Kohli, another Indian and world’s number one shuttler Saina Nehwal was placed at Number 44.
According to the magazine, the rankings were decided considering the marketing potential of an athlete over the next three years and took into account an athlete’s age, home market, charisma, willingness to be marketed and crossover appeal.
