Two Gurgaon-based start-ups in NYT Global Unicorn List

Latest Business News
OYO Rooms, which is an online hotel booking portal and Grofers, a Gurgaon-based hyper-local delivery company, are among 50 companies that may be the next start-up unicorns, according to research carried out by CB Insights for The New York Times.

The report said there are currently 131 startups globally which are currently valued at $1 billion, also known as startup unicorns.

Among the Indian firms who've reached this stage includes e-commerce marketplaces Flipkart and Snapdeal, mobile commerce and digital payment processor Paytm, taxi aggregator Ola, online restaurant guide Zomato, mobile advertising firm InMobi, domestic handset maker Micromax and Big Data & analytics solution provider Mu Sigma.

Quikr too is on the verge of getting in to that list, with its investor valuing it already at $900 million.

The CB Insights’ Next-50 Unicorns list, was built upon by the research firm by running a data screen and factoring in the amount of funding raised, employee turnover and social media mentions.

"The exact valuations of the companies are hard to pin down because the start-ups are private and are not required to disclose their finances, but CB Insights determined that they might be on a path toward a $1 billion value through an algorithm that analysed factors including amount of financing raised, employee turnover and social media mentions," the New York Times article said.

Grofers, started by Albinder Dhindsa and Saurabh Kumar in 2013, allows customers to place an order through a mobile app and receive delivery of food, groceries, toiletries and other items within 90 minutes.

The service is headquartered in Gurgaon, and has raised close to $45 million in 3 rounds, with the most recent one getting it $36 million from two of the biggest investors into Indian startups — Tiger Global and Sequoia.

Oyo Rooms, which is the newest of them all, is the one to watch out though. OYO Rooms which started life as an Airbnb clone called Oravel in 2012, pivoted to its current budget hotel aggregator model in June last year.

Oyo raised $100 million investment led by SoftBank earlier this month, just about five months after securing Rs 125 crore from San Francisco-based Greenoaks Capital and existing investors.

Oyo has presence in more than 90 cities including Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

Dr Kalam’s Last Day, the Untold Story

It has been eight hours since we last talked – sleep eludes me and memories keep flushing down, sometimes as tears. Our day, 27th July, began at 12 noon, when we took our seats in the flight to Guwahati. Dr. Kalam was 1A and I was IC. He was wearing a dark colored “Kalam suit”, and I started off complimenting, “Nice color!” Little did I know this was going to be the last color I will see on him.

Long, 2.5 hours of flying in the monsoon weather. I hate turbulence, and he had mastered over them. Whenever he would see me go cold in shaking plane, he would just pull down the window pane and saw, “Now you don’t see any fear!”

That was followed by another 2.5 hours of car drive to IIM Shillong. For these two-legged trip of five hours, we talked, discussed and debated. These were amongst hundreds of the long flights and longer drives we have been together over the last six years.

As each of them, this was as special too. Three incidents/discussions in particular will be “lasting memories of our last trip”.

First, Dr. Kalam was absolutely worried about the attacks in Punjab. The loss of innocent lives left him filled with sorrow. The topic of lecture at IIM Shillong was Creating a Livable Planet Earth. He related the incident to the topic and said, “it seems the man made forces are as big a threat to the livability of earth as pollution”. We discussed on how, if this trend of violence, pollution and reckless human action continues we will forced to leave earth. “Thirty years, at this rate, maybe”, he said. “You guys must do something about it… it is going to be your future world”

Our second discussion was more national. For the past two days, Dr. Kalam was worried that time and again Parliament, the supreme institution of democracy, was dysfunctional. He said, “I have seen two different governments in my tenure. I have seen more after that. This disruption just keeps happening. It is not right. I really need to find out a way to ensure that the parliament works on developmental politics.”

He then asked me to prepare a surprise assignment question for the students at IIM Shillong, which he would give them only at the end of the lecture. He wanted to them to suggest three innovative ways to make the Parliament more productive and vibrant. Then, after a while he returned on it. “But how can ask them to give solutions if I don’t have any myself”. For the next one hour, we thwarted options after options, who come up with his recommendation over the issue.

We wanted to include this discussion in our upcoming book, Advantage India.

Third, was an experience from the beauty of his humility. We were in a convoy of 6-7 cars. Dr. Kalam and I were in the second car. Ahead us was an open gypsy with three soldiers in it. Two of them were sitting on either side and one lean guy was standing atop, holding his gun. One hour into the road journey, Dr. Kalam said, “Why is he standing? He will get tired. This is like punishment. Can you ask a wireless message to given that he may sit?” I had to convince him, he has been probably instructed to keep standing for better security. He did not relent. We tried radio messaging, that did not work. For the next 1.5 hours of the journey, he reminded me thrice to see if I can hand signal him to sit down. Finally, realizing there is little we can do – he told me, “I want to meet him and thank him”. Later, when we landed in IIM Shillong, I went inquiring through security people and got hold of the standing guy. I took him inside and Dr. Kalam greeted him. He shook his hand, said thank you buddy. “Are you tired? Would you like something to eat? I am sorry you had to stand so long because of me”. The young lean guard, draped in black cloth, was surprised at the treatment. He lost words, just said, “Sir, aapke liye to 6 ghante bhi khade rahenge”.

After this, we went to the lecture hall. He did not want to be late for the lecture. “Students should never be made to wait”, he always said. I quickly set up his mic, briefed on final lecture and took position on the computers. As I pinned his mike, he smiled and said, “Funny guy! Are you doing well?” ‘Funny guy’, when said by Kalam could mean a variety of things, depending on the tone and your own assessment. It could mean, you have done well, you have messed up something, you should listen to him or just that you have been plain naïve or he was just being jovial. Over six years I had learnt to interpret Funny Guy like the back of my palm. This time it was the last case.

“Funny guy! Are you doing well?” he said. I smiled back, “Yes”. Those were the last words he said. Two minutes into the speech, sitting behind him, I heard a long pause after completing one sentence. I looked at him, he fell down.

We picked him up. As the doctor rushed, we tried whatever we could. I will never forget the look in his three-quarter closed eyes and I held his head with one hand and tried reviving with whatever I could. His hands clenched, curled onto my finger. There was stillness on his face and those wise eyes were motionlessly radiating wisdom. He never said a word. He did not show pain, only purpose was visible.

In five minutes, we were in the nearest hospital. In another few minutes ,the they indicated the missile man had flown away, forever. I touched his feet, one last time. Adieu old friend! Grand mentor! See you in my thoughts and meet in the next birth.

As turned back, a closet of thoughts opened.

Often he would ask me, “You are young, decide what will like to be remembered for?” I kept thinking of new impressive answers, till one day I gave up and resorted to tit-for-tat. I asked him back, “First you tell me, what will you like to be remembered for? President, Scientist, Writer, Missile man, India 2020, Target 3 billion…. What?” I thought I had made the question easier by giving options, but he sprang on me a surprise. “Teacher”, he said.

Then something he said two weeks back when we were discussing about his missile time friends. He said, “Children need to take care of their parents. It is sad that sometimes this is not happening”. He paused and said, “Two things. Elders must also do. Never leave wealth at your deathbed – that leaves a fighting family. Second, one is blessed is one can die working, standing tall without any long drawn ailing. Goodbyes should be short, really short”.

Today, I look back – he took the final journey, teaching, what he always wanted to be remembered doing. And, till his final moment he was standing, working and lecturing. He left us, as a great teacher, standing tall. He leaves the world with nothing accumulated in his account but loads of wishes and love of people. He was a successful, even in his end.

Will miss all the lunches and dinners we had together, will miss all the times you surprised me with your humility and startled me with your curiosity, will miss the lessons of life you taught in action and words, will miss our struggles to race to make into flights, our trips, our long debates. You gave me dreams, you showed me dreams need to be impossible, for anything else is a compromise to my own ability. The man is gone, the mission lives on. Long live Kalam.

Your indebted student,
Srijan Pal Singh

First Year Report-Card Arrives for Modi Led NDA Government

Narendra Modi News

While the heat wave continues to raise death-toll, India evaluates the first year in office for Mr. Prime Minister. Did Modi do enough to secure the confidence of his voters? Did the Modi wave power India’s GDP? While it is too early to assess his overall performance, the overwhelming sentiment across India is that “achche din,” or the good days still loom large on the horizon.

Reviving the Economy

Modi took his office with an aim to kick start India’s deficient economic growth. His economic policies aimed at overhauling the long due structural reform necessary to attract foreign investment. While his words of “red carpet, not red tape” reverberate in his “Come Make in India” campaign, thus far, the results have been mixed at best.

The last twelve months have witnessed PM preside over general improvement of the economy, where the inflation rate has been cut in half and deficit has been reduced. These numbers however have low relevance to PM Modi assuming his chair, than with falling oil and gold prices worldwide. Even the revised estimate of India’s GDP growth of 7.5%, is a result of changes made to the rate of calculation, than a curb at inflation. The first quarter of this year has witnessed sluggish exports and volatile stock exchange. However that being said, not all is lost for Modi!

Growth in FDI

Prime Minister Modi has fared much better in his efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and attract foreign investment in India. He has raised the FDI cap across different sectors, including: defense, telecommunication, infrastructure and insurance, in a bid to bring more money, encourage economic growth and employment generation.

Minimum Government, Maximum Governance

Modi’s philosophy of “minimum government and maximum governance” has created the most centralized, top-down, bureaucracy-driven, one person centric central government system since Indira Gandhi’s term in mid 1970’s. Those that had concerns on “red-tapism” and “hinderance in decision making” now face a completely different kind of concern, as files keep piling up in PMO (the only central decision making authority).

Senior positions still stand vacant, such as the three-member independent election commission, leaving vital decisions clogged-up. With Modi too busy to keep up with all affairs of decision making, the NDA-government needs to find a solution soon to remain adrift.

In his one-year report card, one should assume that PM Modi’s foreign policy has been phenomenal and represents an indisputable bright spot among different problems that still persist in governance.

While sports experts were confident that modern day legends such as Usain Bolt, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo would score high on the list. The monthly magazine that reports on the financial aspects of sports across the world, placed 26-year-old Virat Kohli just a notch below British Formula One champion, Lewis Hamilton. This list was also incredibly lenient to Neymar, who was named as the second most marketable sportsperson.

Besides this, United State golfer Jordan Spieth was crowned number three, while another American swimmer Missy Franklin was put at fourth.

Below Kohli, was United States basketball star Stephen Curry at seventh, followed by Japanese tennis sensation Kei Nishikori.

Tennis player Novak Djokovic was placed at 14 and Ronaldo, Messi found the 16th and 22nd spot respectively. Besides Kohli, another Indian and world’s number one shuttler Saina Nehwal was placed at Number 44.

Devastation Struck Nepal Succumbs to Scarcity of Equipment and Rescue Experts

As Nepal recuperates from the devastating Earthquake, rescuers in Nepal battle to reach the remote areas.
The catastrophic earthquake which has already claimed 4,310 lives is expected to grow multifold as aid workers and army personnel continue to press hard to reach areas surrounding Kathmandu.

While, the UN proclaimed that around eight million people have been affected from this disaster. PM Sushil Koirala highlighted that, “getting help to some of the worst affect areas was a major obstacle”. He added that the need for the hour was to desperately seek for help in supplies such as: tents, water and food to the needy.

In a major despair, the Prime Minister’s office indicated that the “Appeal for rescues were flooding from all over the country. But, due to scarcity of equipment and rescue experts, the team was unable to reach many in dire straits.”

On Tuesday, the Homes Ministry spokesperson, Mr. Laxmi Prasad Dhakal indicated that the official death toll had risen from 4,310, with around 7,900 injured. Amidst fear of food and water shortages, locals in Nepal were found rushing to stores and petrol stations to stock up essential commodities.

This disaster has been already rated as the nations’ deadliest in more than 80 years and there is fear in the valley that the toll could raise further, when rescuers discover the full extent of the damage outside the region of Kathmandu.

Even after three days of the quake, rescue teams have been unable to reach some of the worst affected regions of Lamjung, described as the epicenter to the earthquake.

This earthquake is a serious blow to the economy of one of the world’s poorest country, which is already reeling from a decade-long civil war.

Understanding the Concept of Net Neutrality

Latest News on Mobile
The concept of Net Neutrality revolves around the principle that internet service providers and governments should treat all kinds of data on the World Wide Web equally. This means, there shouldn’t be any discrimination or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment and even mode of communication.

Being neutral is the only way one can still stay connected with reality. With a neutral attitude, we can remain fair, unbiased and balanced. Thus, with the emergence of the concept of net neutrality, imagining life without it would only lead to chaos. This means the latest news on mobile that we come across is not vetted or influenced based on any discrimination and is information in its purest form. The basic intention with net neutrality is that it will act as a public tool. Thus, nobody except the reader has the right to choose what they want to consume and what they don’t. In simple words, it only means avoiding colonization of the virtual world.

Many frequent bloggers and personalities have commented on this concern. Harsha Bhogle took to the micro-blogging site saying, “The internet is a symbol of an equal opportunity society. It has levelled the world. It has to stay free & open” Gul Panag also recently tweeted, “Our socio economic divide may not be bridged easily. But the digital divide, to a large extent, is being bridged- IFF #NetNeutrality remains”

From famous celebs to a common man, everyone is rising above the chaining of the Internet and bringing the revolution of Net Neutrality.

Is it a Plane? Is it a Bird? It’s M-Zero, India's First Supercar

Current News
Do you skip a heartbeat, every time you see a Supercar on road? Have you wondered what goes behind creating a dream machine like that? The business of creating mean machines that rule the road, is more or less a dream job for most of us. Right from penning down the design on the drawing board, to building a concept and finally, creating the finished product – the journey of manufacturing a car is laced with creativity, passion and a zeal for innovation.

On that note, let’s take the pleasure of introducing you to a new automotive start-up, Mean Metal Motors- which is working on India’s first supercar. Yes! You heard us right, our first ever supercar!

Taking a skip from the usual makers of Supercars, all eyes are set on India to deliver this “Mean Machine.” Of course, if the Polish, Germans and British can make it, why not us?

Known as the M-Zero, four teams from four countries are working on turning this design dream to reality. While, the team in Portugal and Italy is taking care of the styling and body, the team in UK is looking after the simulations and analysis. Additionally, the responsibility for breeding life to the car, i.e. engine, transmission, aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics and electronics has been taken care by the team in India.

Chassis

The M-Zero has a light-weight carbon-fiber monologue tub chassis, which is intended at providing rigidity to the vehicle. Though, the chassis will be designed by the members at Mean Metal Motors, it will be given to various part manufacturers for production.

Engine

The “M-Zero is a hybrid mid-engined supercar, loaded with a 4.0-litre AMG V8 bi-turbo or the 4.8-litre NA V10 engine. The founder and director of “Mean Metal Motors” emphasized on the fact that they were targeting the 500+ bhp mark for the power output.

Features

With features such as the usage of special alloys for better adaptability of shapes, structure and a turbulizer that will reduce the aerodynamic drag; this “Mean Machine” will be an eye candy for sure.
This grand project is intended at raising $7 million in the first round of funding. However, sadly, the manufacturing facility will not be in India but in a Scandinavian country. And, the market they are targeting, is Europe.

Latest News Headlines
An Airbus operated by Lufthansa's Germanwings budget airline crashed into a mountainside in the French Alps on Tuesday, March 24th 2015, killing all 150 people on board including 16 schoolchildren. Helicopters and rescue personnel swarmed into the remote, rugged area in southeastern France after the crash but found no signs of life.

The chief executive of Lufthansa’s lowcost arm, Germanwings, said “ On Tuesday morning, the aircraft reached its cruising height of 38,000ft at 10.45am, 44 minutes into the flight, and began to descent just a minute or two later. Contact was lost at 10.53am when the plane was at 6,000ft.”

The ones aboard who are believed to be dead included 45 Spanish, 67 German nationals and a party of 16 German teenagers who were returning from an exchange trip to Spain. Varanasi to Kathmandu Bus Service Debuts for Budget Travel

Todays Latest News Headlines
Much to the delight of budget travelers, both India and Nepal have agreed on launching a direct bus service between Varanasi and Kathmandu. The new bus service is expected to promote religious tourism on both side of the border.

On the sidelines of the 18th SAARC Summit last November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Sushil Koirala had inked this twin-city pact, along with an agreement of $1-billion line of credit to Nepal.

This new bus service will be jointly flagged off on Thursday morning from the Dasharath Stadium by Mr. Bimalendra Nidhi (Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation) and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae. Featuring a modern 35-seater fully air-conditioned coach, this state-of-the-art bus will play daily from both sides.

In the recent years, the dominance of Maoism in Nepal and the participation of People’s Republic of China in the strengthening of economic and political ties with Nepal have resulted in Nepal distancing its ties with India.

After recent dialogs between the two nations, this new bus service is expected to strengthen the Indo-Nepalese ties.

Often described as an example of extravagance, the tailored navy suit worn by PM Modi was finally put up for auction. The blue pined striped suit is being auctioned along with 450 other gifts received by Mr. Modi, since becoming the Prime Minister.

11 Indian Languages Hit the Twitter Trend

Delhi Latest NewsTwitter has a new surprise in store for people who love tweeting in their native language.  On February 15th, when India cruised to a comfortable win against Pakistan, tweeters from across the globe celebrated India’s victory through the hashtag #जयहिन्द.

Although twitter had rolled out support for hashtags in a number of different local languages a few days before the penultimate battle, not many noticed it. Eden Golshani, Software Engineer at Twitter sent out a few tweets to test the newest feature of twitter last week, demonstrating support for 11 Indian languages, namely:
  • Devanagari (Hindi, Nepali, Marathi, Sanskrit)
  • Bengali
  • Gujarati
  • Punjabi
  • Oriya
  • Tamil
  • Telugu
  • Malayalam
  • Kannada
The overwhelming response to India’s win on twitter through the hashtag #जयहिन्द, was the first ever Devnagiri script to trend on Twitter. While we await some popular trends in other Indian languages as well, Tamil users would be delighted to learn that #தமிழ்வாழ்க, (Tamilvalka), which means 'Long Live Tamil' recently made it to the top Twitter trend in India.

John Legend and rapper Common brings the night to a soaring end, singing "Glory," their politically aware "Selma" theme song. The song came out in December, too late to qualify for a Grammy nomination, though it is in the running for a best song Oscar.

While, the song 'Selma' was played in the finale, LL Cool J and Gwyneth Paltrow introduced an angelic Beyonce, who performed "Precious Lord, Take My Hand". Beyonce appeared saintly in all white, surrounded by a choir of male singers in white suits. Her delivery of the hymn was glorious but somber, staying still as she sang through the classic.

Obama's Republic Day Appearance Showered With Love and Exotic Flowers

World Latest News
While his visit may be marked by a series of important bilateral-agreements, the authorities have left no stones unturned in making Obama’s visit to the capital a memorable one.

Obama’s attendance as the Chief Guest of honor is the first time a US head of state has arrived in India for this occasion. Thus, while all eyes will be set on the Guest, the radiance and fragrance of thousands of exotic flowers will swell all around India Gate.

According to a recent news report, a budget of Rs. 15 lakh has been allocated on floral arrangements for the VVIP stage on India Gate. Approximately 4,000 Holland variety Tulips have been ordered, along with 1,000 golden orchids, 1,500 Oriental Lilies, 3,000 cut Anthurium and Dutch Rose. Moreover, 20 quintals of chrysanthemums and Indian marigolds have also been sourced for display.
CPWD has been advised to use only fresh, healthy and free from disease flowers for 26th January. While, other specifications in respect to size, shape and color of the floral arrangement have also been issued.

The expense on this grand reception is more than the quarterly expense on floral decoration in the PMO (Prime Minister’s office) or Home Ministry.

Thus, while questions may be raised about this lavish expenditure, one thing is for sure, that “Guests are treated like Gods” in India!

The Search for AirAsia Flight QZ8501 Continues

Latest News on Mobile
The sudden disappearance of AirAsia Flight QZ8501 in the Indonesian airspace one hour after takeoff has fuelled a number of questions. For instance, what caused the loss of contact? Is air travel still safe? Why an Asian airline again?

Questions are countless but the fact remains that the Air Bus A320-200 took off from the Indonesian city of Surabaya at 05:36 GMT local time Sunday with 155 passengers and 7 crewmembers on board. The destination was Singapore, a journey that takes a little over two hours. It hadn’t been even an hour after takeoff, roughly around 06:12 GMT, one of the pilots asked air traffic control permission to turn and climb to a higher altitude in an attempt to avoid bad weather. Minutes later, the plane disappeared from air traffic control’s radar. At 07:55 GMT the plan was declared missing, its last known position being over the Java Sea, between the islands of Belitung and Borneo.

Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo says that the multinational search teams are scouring an area where the Java Sea is 40-50 metres (130-160 feet) deep. Indonesia has accepted Singapore's offer of two sets of underwater locator beacon detectors to scour the seabed. Unfortunately, the chances of mud and hard rock’s interference with sonar pings emitted by the plane's Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) are quite high.

Meanwhile, the airline company continues to provide support and assistance to the next-of-kin of passengers’ on Flight QZ8501. AirAsia has already flown 16 next-of-kin to Indonesia and plans to transport another 11 there on Monday, 29th December 2014.
