While his visit may be marked by a series of important bilateral-agreements, the authorities have left no stones unturned in making Obama’s visit to the capital a memorable one.
Obama’s attendance as the Chief Guest of honor is the first time a US head of state has arrived in India for this occasion. Thus, while all eyes will be set on the Guest, the radiance and fragrance of thousands of exotic flowers will swell all around India Gate.
According to a recent news report, a budget of Rs. 15 lakh has been allocated on floral arrangements for the VVIP stage on India Gate. Approximately 4,000 Holland variety Tulips have been ordered, along with 1,000 golden orchids, 1,500 Oriental Lilies, 3,000 cut Anthurium and Dutch Rose. Moreover, 20 quintals of chrysanthemums and Indian marigolds have also been sourced for display.
CPWD has been advised to use only fresh, healthy and free from disease flowers for 26th January. While, other specifications in respect to size, shape and color of the floral arrangement have also been issued.
The expense on this grand reception is more than the quarterly expense on floral decoration in the PMO (Prime Minister’s office) or Home Ministry.
Thus, while questions may be raised about this lavish expenditure, one thing is for sure, that “Guests are treated like Gods” in India!
