First Year Report-Card Arrives for Modi Led NDA Government

While the heat wave continues to raise death-toll, India evaluates the first year in office for Mr. Prime Minister. Did Modi do enough to secure the confidence of his voters? Did the Modi wave power India’s GDP? While it is too early to assess his overall performance, the overwhelming sentiment across India is that “achche din,” or the good days still loom large on the horizon.

Reviving the Economy

Modi took his office with an aim to kick start India’s deficient economic growth. His economic policies aimed at overhauling the long due structural reform necessary to attract foreign investment. Modi’s philosophy of “minimum government and maximum governance” has created the most centralized, top-down, bureaucracy-driven, one person centric central government system since Indira Gandhi’s term in mid 1970’s. Those that had concerns on “red-tapism” and “hinderance in decision making” now face a completely different kind of concern, as files keep piling up in PMO (the only central decision making authority).

Senior positions still stand vacant, such as the three-member independent election commission, leaving vital decisions clogged-up. With Modi too busy to keep up with all affairs of decision making, the NDA-government needs to find a solution soon to remain adrift.

In his one-year report card, one should assume that PM Modi’s foreign policy has been phenomenal and represents an indisputable bright spot among different problems that still persist in governance.

PM Modi Begins His 3-Day China Tour to Revive Strenuous Indo-Sino Relationship

Amidst many rivalries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Xi Jinping’s hometown Xi’an to mark his three-day visit to China. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi expressed his confidence on strengthening business ties and mutual trust between the two nations and indicated that this three-day tour would mark a new beginning for Indo-China business ties.

Modi began his day with a visit to the famous Terracotta Warriors museum that depicts the armies of the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. He then visited the famous Buddhist Dashang temple in Shaanxi.

Between warm welcome and enthusiasm, Xi Jinping joined Modi in the afternoon for a round of talks for rapport building. He discussed the most contentious issues like border dispute, China’s big push to account India into the Silk Road project and strengthening business ties.

After their brief conversation, Xi accompanied Mr. Narendra Modi to the famous Wild Goose Padoga. Built in the sixth century, this magnificent structure highlights famous Chinese Buddhist monk Xuan Zang’s 17-year long journey.

Modi is expected to leave for Beijing late in the evening. He is scheduled to hold talks with Premier Li Keqiang next day and will go to Shanghai, where he would address a business get-together and inaugurate the first Gandhi chair at Fundan University.

China is the first leg of Modi’s three-nation tour that includes his visit to Mongolia and South Korea.

Mangalyaan (Mars mission) is an example of the Indian talent” Highlighting the work done by his government in 11 months time, Modi said, "Within 10 months, I've done what no other PM has in 42 years. It is not that only the government has changed. 'Jan Man' has changed. There is a new atmosphere of trust in our nation. Whatever is happening is not due to Modi but it is due to the people of India"

Taking a swing at the poor performance of the opposition back home, Modi emphasized on his commitment to clean up the mess of the past. The Prime Minister claimed that he has built an atmosphere of a newly found trust and confidence in the country, and added that “The government in India has changed, so has the outlook of Indians. My job is to ensure that India is cleaned up. It will take time to clean up the mess of the past. There is an atmosphere of trust in India now”

PM Emphasizes the Need for Greater Representation; Pitches For an Indian as IMF Deputy

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched for a greater representation of Indians in the top positions at IMF.

In his meeting with Lagarde, who is in India on a two-day visit, Modi stressed “on the need of having greater representation for Indians at the highest level of IMF.”

Lagarde earlier indicated that “one of these days” an Indian can head the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Among Indian who have held top positions at IMF, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan has served as a chief Economist, while Arvind Subramanian (India’s Chief Economic Advisor) has served as an economist at the multilateral organization.

Jagrade, and her predecessor Dominique Strauss Kahn were from France and traditionally, the position of IMF’s MD was held by Europeans. However, in the past few years, many developing countries from Asia and Latin America have emphasized on the need to change this trend.

In addition to greater representation, during his brief meeting with Jagrade, Modi also emphasized on the “importance of having a clear direction and focus,” and indicated that reforms should not merely be restricted to legislation, as implementation and direction were equally important.

According to recent reports, the Finance Minister and the IMF chief jointly agreed to host a high level conference talk in March 2016 on 'Advancing Asia: Investing for the Future.'

India, Seychelles Sign 4 Packs to Strengthen Security Alliance

India on Wednesday signed four agreements with Seychelles in a bid to strengthen strategic alliance, boost security and maritime partnership. On the first leg of his three-nation tour, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi arrived in the western Indian Ocean Island on Wednesday, 11 March 2015.

After his talks with Seychelles President James Alix Michel, Modi about his brief visit said, “Seychellesis a vital partner in our Indian Ocean neighbourhood” further adding, “however short it may be, this visit has been very productive. It is no surprise that Seychelles is my first destination in the Indian Ocean Region”

Modi’s visit to Seychelles made top headlines in the news, as he is the first Prime Minister to visit Seychelles in 34 years. It was back in 1981 when Indira Gandhi had visited the country.

After the meeting with Michel, Modi announced that India will give a second Dronier aircraft to the country. He also launched the Coastal Surveillance Radar Project, symbolizing it as cooperation between the two nations.

Furthermore, Modi and Michel witnessed the signing of four agreements: cooperation in hydrography, renewable energy, infrastructure development and sale of navigation charts and electronic navigational charts.

Varanasi to Kathmandu Bus Service Debuts for Budget Travel

Much to the delight of budget travelers, both India and Nepal have agreed on launching a direct bus service between Varanasi and Kathmandu. The new bus service is expected to promote religious tourism on both side of the border.

On the sidelines of the 18th SAARC Summit last November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Sushil Koirala had inked this twin-city pact, along with an agreement of $1-billion line of credit to Nepal.

This new bus service will be jointly flagged off on Thursday morning from the Dasharath Stadium by Mr. Bimalendra Nidhi (Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation) and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae. Featuring a modern 35-seater fully air-conditioned coach, this state-of-the-art bus will play daily from both sides.

In the recent years, the dominance of Maoism in Nepal and the participation of People’s Republic of China in the strengthening of economic and political ties with Nepal have resulted in Nepal distancing its ties with India.

After recent dialogs between the two nations, this new bus service is expected to strengthen the Indo-Nepalese ties.

Modi's Monogrammed Suit Goes Under the Hammer for Rs 4.31 Crore

The suit that literary made Prime Minister Narendra Modi a talking point during President Barrack Obama’s visit to India is back in the news once again. Only this time around, there’s more positive to it than criticism!

Often described as an example of extravagance, the tailored navy suit worn by PM Modi was finally put up for auction. The blue pined striped suit is being auctioned along with 450 other gifts received by Mr. Modi, since becoming the Prime Minister.

Modi's monogrammed suit went under the hammer to Surat-based trader Lalji Patel and his son for Rs 4.31 crore in the dying moments of an intense bidding. Earlier, a Surat-based diamond trader Mukesh Patel earlier made an offer of Rs 2 crore, and later raised the bid through a written offer of Rs. 2.31 crore.

Modi was photographed wearing the pine striped suit during his summit talks with Obama on January 25th, when he made a joint media appearance. On closer inspection, photographs later revealed that the stripes were infact a monogram of ‘Narendra Damondardas Modi’ embroidered vertically on the fabric.Sources in the government revealed that some ministerial colleagues of Modi had advised him to wear this suit for Obama’s visit to India.

This suit has been claimed to cost Rs 10 lakh and the funds generated from the auction would be used for the Swachh Bharat campaign.
