Analyzing Narendra Modi’s First Year at Office

Almost a year ago, India witnessed a historic mandate when people voted decisively for a single party to form the government. By defying all odds and predictions of political pundits, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi was voted into power.

Riding on the expectations of people, Modi led Union government recently completed its one year in office. So how did Modi fare? Did he do enough to please his voters?

Analyzing Modi’s One Year Journey

According to economic pundits, in the past one year, Modi has managed to usher a hope of economic revival and build positive sentiments. Business confidence among Indian citizens is on a rise, though not all expectations have to be fulfilled.

One of the main achievements for Modi led BJP government has been the passing of FDI in insurance, which has been one issue that has been clamouring for long. Further, the government has also passed the coal, mining and minerals amendment bills.

If latest BJP news is to be believed, the spectrum auction has been tremendously successful as well. Moreover, diesel prices and LPG subsidies have been regularized. This clearly indicates that despite economic challenges, the union government has pushed through many reforms and is moving the country’s economy in right direction.

Undeterred by the opposition pot shots demanding resignation of his Foreign Minister and the BJP Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a different mission, a mission to rule the social media. You don’t believe it?

The Indian Prime Minister on Wednesday launched his mobile application which provides a unique opportunity to receive messages and e-mails directly from Modi.

The Android-based application is also aimed at giving a chance to people to interact with him and share ideas and suggestions.

“The Mobile App has several innovative features. You can download it from Play Store. Feedback is welcome,” he further tweeted.

The official app will provide latest information, instant updates and help one to contribute towards various tasks.

The application description said, "Download the app and get the latest updates anywhere, anytime! Highlights of the Narendra Modi app include receiving the latest news and updates, exclusive opportunity to receive E-Mails & Messages directly from the PM and 'Mann Ki Baat' with the PM."

It further said, "Small Tasks, big satisfaction: contribute & earn Badges through to-do tasks." Apart from providing a chance to interact with the Prime Minister and share ideas and suggestions, it will also give latest thoughts from Modi and his blogs.

"Know more about PM Narendra Modi through unique insights in the Biography section as also his governance initiatives\ and achievements," the description said, adding learn more about PM Modi's efforts augmenting India's global recognition and how governance was improving lives through infographics.

Since Modi took office last year as leader of the world’s largest democracy, policy pronouncements have come in 140-character snippets. He has used Twitter and other social-media services to engage in diplomacy and build his image in a way few other global leaders have.

Modi’s personal account, @narendramodi, has over 12 million followers. That is more than Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has 6.3 million followers.

Modi, who is also on Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube, also joined the Chinese microblogging service, Weibo on May 4. By late next day, the Prime Minister had 33,000 followers on Weibo.

With such enthusiasm, and the urge to connect with people, Modi is definitely the king of social media.

First Year Report-Card Arrives for Modi Led NDA Government

While the heat wave continues to raise death-toll, India evaluates the first year in office for Mr. Prime Minister. Did Modi do enough to secure the confidence of his voters? Did the Modi wave power India’s GDP? While it is too early to assess his overall performance, the overwhelming sentiment across India is that “achche din,” or the good days still loom large on the horizon.

Reviving the Economy

Modi took his office with an aim to kick start India’s deficient economic growth. His economic policies aimed at overhauling the long due structural reform necessary to attract foreign investment. While his words of “red carpet, not red tape” reverberate in his “Come Make in India” campaign, thus far, the results have been mixed at best.

The last twelve months have witnessed PM preside over general improvement of the economy, where the inflation rate has been cut in half and deficit has been reduced. These numbers however have low relevance to PM Modi assuming his chair, than with falling oil and gold prices worldwide. Even the revised estimate of India’s GDP growth of 7.5%, is a result of changes made to the rate of calculation, than a curb at inflation. The first quarter of this year has witnessed sluggish exports and volatile stock exchange. However that being said, not all is lost for Modi!

Growth in FDI

Prime Minister Modi has fared much better in his efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and attract foreign investment in India. He has raised the FDI cap across different sectors, including: defense, telecommunication, infrastructure and insurance, in a bid to bring more money, encourage economic growth and employment generation.

Minimum Government, Maximum Governance

Modi’s philosophy of “minimum government and maximum governance” has created the most centralized, top-down, bureaucracy-driven, one person centric central government system since Indira Gandhi’s term in mid 1970’s. Those that had concerns on “red-tapism” and “hinderance in decision making” now face a completely different kind of concern, as files keep piling up in PMO (the only central decision making authority).

Senior positions still stand vacant, such as the three-member independent election commission, leaving vital decisions clogged-up. With Modi too busy to keep up with all affairs of decision making, the NDA-government needs to find a solution soon to remain adrift.

In his one-year report card, one should assume that PM Modi’s foreign policy has been phenomenal and represents an indisputable bright spot among different problems that still persist in governance.

As Delhi Gears up for Polls, BJP and AAP lock horns over Controversial Advertisement

Delhi goes to poll in less than five days, AAP and BJP are still seen quarrelling over a controversial advertisement in newspaper. The advertisement mocks AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal threatening to disrupt Republic Day celebrations and later complaining that he was not issued a VIP pass. The Aam Admi Party has issued a two-hour deadline to withdraw the advertisement and apologise.

“What has happened to BJP? First they targeted my children. I remained silent. Annaji had said one should have capacity to tolerate but BJP's ad in today's newspapers has crossed all limits,” said AAP leader Arvind Kejrival. In fact, he has even called for an emergency party meeting at his residence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday had targeted AAP saying, “If you give vote to a government that believes in agitations, they won't have time to discuss your issues. They only need space in media." The PM furthered his argument against the opposition party, saying that they were only interested in Dharnas and not in effectively running the state government.

Who will prove their mettle at the Delhi State Elections 2015 – AAP or BJP?

Delhi votes on February 7. The counting will be done three days later, on February 10.
