11 Indian Languages Hit the Twitter Trend

Delhi Latest NewsTwitter has a new surprise in store for people who love tweeting in their native language.  On February 15th, when India cruised to a comfortable win against Pakistan, tweeters from across the globe celebrated India’s victory through the hashtag #जयहिन्द.

Although twitter had rolled out support for hashtags in a number of different local languages a few days before the penultimate battle, not many noticed it. Eden Golshani, Software Engineer at Twitter sent out a few tweets to test the newest feature of twitter last week, demonstrating support for 11 Indian languages, namely:
  • Devanagari (Hindi, Nepali, Marathi, Sanskrit)
  • Bengali
  • Gujarati
  • Punjabi
  • Oriya
  • Tamil
  • Telugu
  • Malayalam
  • Kannada
The overwhelming response to India’s win on twitter through the hashtag #जयहिन्द, was the first ever Devnagiri script to trend on Twitter. While we await some popular trends in other Indian languages as well, Tamil users would be delighted to learn that #தமிழ்வாழ்க, (Tamilvalka), which means 'Long Live Tamil' recently made it to the top Twitter trend in India.
